Chichen Itza! Mayan history! Before my eyes.
It wasn’t planned, but when I arrived in Cancun I learned we were just weeks away from the spring equinox, a time when the ancient Mayan calendar (which is what the so-called pyramids are) would do a shadow effect of a snake crawling down the structure. (And traveling without a schedule enables you to hang around for things you discover along the way or for surprises.)
From about 4pm to 5pm, on March 21st, although that was not the top day for this happening, this is what we all saw. (On the best day the place was so crowded that it would not have been a nice experience at all.)
And this is just a part of what you see when you walk around it.
This is one of the very rare times that I opted to go someplace on an actual tour. However, rather than take the tour bus from Cancun to Chichen Itza and then back to Cancun, I arranged to not return to Cancun. That way, the price of the tour contributed to the price of my bus fair onward.
I really enjoyed Jacier, our tour guide so I asked for his contact info. He does various tours and also arranges some. He invites potential tour-goers to call him.
